C8 (USP L7)

C8 (USP L7) – Moderate Retention for Faster Elution

Overview

C8 (Octylsilane) is a moderately hydrophobic reversed-phase column that offers faster elution times compared to C18. It is particularly useful for highly hydrophobic compounds that might retain too strongly on C18.

Key Properties

  • Separation Mechanism: Similar to C18 but with weaker hydrophobic interactions.
  • pH Range: pH 2–10, resistant to hydrolysis.
  • Carbon Load (100Å Pore Size): Moderate carbon loading for faster elution.
  • Endcapping: Fully endcapped to reduce secondary interactions and peak tailing.

Performance & Benefits

Lower Retention than C18 Suitable for high-throughput analysis.

Good Selectivity for Hydrophobic Compounds Reduces excessive retention.

USP Compliance Meets L7 specifications for regulated industries.

Better Peak Shape for Certain Compounds Reduces tailing in some cases.

Recommended Application Areas

  • Pharmaceuticals Retains non-polar drugs while allowing faster elution.
  • Environmental Analysis Detects organic pollutants in water samples.
  • Food & Beverage Suitable for analyzing fat-soluble vitamins and food additives.
  • Chemical Industry Used for separating fine chemicals and intermediates.
