Self‑Regenerating Suppressor Module for Ion Chromatography
CromSil™ Suppressa is a high-performance ion chromatography suppressor module designed to remove eluent ions and reduce background conductivity before the detector. By virtually eliminating the eluent’s conductivity, it enables ultra-sensitive detection of target anions in solution. This self-regenerating suppressor offers a universal solution compatible with any IC system for suppressed conductivity detection of anions. Blending robust engineering with cutting-edge membrane technology, CromSil™ Suppressa delivers the benefits of suppressed IC—improved signal-to-noise and lower detection limits—without the frequent maintenance or downtime of traditional suppressor columns.
Traditional suppressor columns achieved this but required chemical regeneration every 6–8 hours of operation, leading to workflow interruptions. CromSil™ Suppressa overcomes this limitation with a continuous suppression design. Its core is a capillary ion-exchange membrane that constantly removes cationic eluent ions (e.g. Na⁺) from the mobile phase by exchanging them for hydronium (H⁺) ions across the membrane. The removed cations are carried away in a flowing regenerant solution on the outside of the membrane, so the suppressor is continually regenerated in real-time. The result is that the eluent (e.g. Na₂CO₃ or NaOH) is converted to a weak acid (H₂CO₃) or water before reaching the detector, leaving only the analyte ions to produce a conductivity signal. This membrane-based suppression technology requires no electrical power (it uses a simple chemical regenerant flow) and is designed for hydroxide and carbonate eluents commonly used in anion analysis. The Suppressa module integrates easily into any IC system’s flow path (post-column, pre-detector) and operates continuously, eliminating the start-stop regeneration cycles of older systems. The rugged construction ensures stable performance over long run times, and the membrane is housed in a compact format that can handle typical IC flow rates with minimal backpressure.

Description/Value
|---|---|
Suppression Type
Continuous chemical suppressor using a cation-exchange capillary membrane (self-recharging via regenerant flow).
Eluents Supported
Optimized for alkaline eluents (e.g. NaOH, Na₂CO₃/NaHCO₃) – converts them to water/weak acid for suppressed conductivity detection.
Compatibility
Instrument-agnostic – connects to any HPLC/IC system with a conductivity detector (standard tubing connections). No external power required for operation.
Regenerant Requirement
Use a mild acid regenerant (e.g. dilute H₂SO₄ or HCl) on the suppressor’s external circuit to continuously renew the exchange capacity. The design ensures no downtime by maintaining regeneration during analysis.
Performance
Effectively suppresses eluent conductivity to near-zero, enabling detection of anions at sub-ppm levels. Improves baseline stability and sensitivity significantly compared to non-suppressed methods.
Materials & Design
Ion-exchange polymer membrane in a PEEK housing (metal-free flow path). All wetted components are chemically resistant for use with aggressive eluents and acids.
Operating Range
Compatible with typical IC flow rates (e.g. 0.5 – 2.0 mL/min). Stable over a wide range of temperatures (ambient to 60 °C) and eluent concentrations used in routine anion analyses.
Maintenance
Minimal – the continuous operation negates frequent manual regenerations. Periodic replacement of regenerant solution and basic upkeep are all that is required. The unit is designed for long service life under constant use (robust membrane tolerates extended operation).
Continuous Suppression, No Downtime
Self-regenerating operation maintains suppression continuously, eliminating 6–8 hour regeneration intervals of older suppressors. This means higher throughput and no interruptions during critical analyses.
Easy to Use & Integrate
Truly plug-and-play design – simply plumb the Suppressa into your detector inlet and provide regenerant flow. No special fittings or power supplies needed. Its universal compatibility allows it to work with any ion chromatograph, new or existing.
Robust and Long-Lasting
Engineered for durability, the Suppressa’s membrane and housing materials are chemically stable and resist fouling. The module provides consistent performance over long runs, reducing the frequency of consumable replacement (a cost-saving advantage).
Enhanced Sensitivity
By drastically lowering baseline conductance, CromSil™ Suppressa unlocks lower detection limits for anions. Trace contaminants like fluoride, nitrate, or sulfate in high-purity water can be accurately quantified thanks to the near-zero background noise.
Affordable Solution
Compared to proprietary suppressor devices, Suppressa is cost-effective both in initial purchase and over its lifetime. Fewer consumables and less downtime mean a lower cost per analysis (great for budget-conscious labs).
High Application Versatility
Effective for any anion analysis in aqueous samples – from environmental waters to industrial effluents. It handles a wide dynamic range of analyte concentrations without saturation, ensuring linear responses for both trace and major ions.
Maintenance Simplification
No more frequent manual regenerations or swapping out suppressor columns mid-day. The continuous regenerant flow keeps Suppressa at peak performance, so users only need to replenish regenerant occasionally. This frees up operator time and reduces potential errors.
Ideal for drinking water and wastewater testing labs performing EPA or ISO methods for anions (fluoride, chloride, nitrate, sulfate, etc.). CromSil™ Suppressa enables these labs to meet strict regulatory detection limits for pollutants (like bromate or nitrite in drinking water) with confidence and consistency.
Useful in analysis of beverages (e.g. juice, dairy, brewing water) where high background ions (such as organic acids or salts) need suppressing to measure target anions accurately. The suppressor improves the detection of additives or contaminants (like phosphate or chloride) in complex food matrices.
Employed in QC labs for analyzing ionic impurities or counterions in pharmaceutical formulations (e.g. residual sulfate or phosphate in drugs). Also relevant for clinical chemistry assays of anions in bodily fluids (where high ionic strength matrices can be present).
Supports chemical manufacturers in monitoring anionic species in process streams, boiler water, plating baths, and ultra-pure water systems. The continuous suppression is especially beneficial for 24/7 monitoring setups, providing stable operation in automation scenarios.
Enables advanced research in ion-exchange and ion chromatography by providing a reliable suppressor for method development. Students and researchers benefit from its ease of use and can focus on chemistry rather than troubleshooting suppression cycles. In research on novel anions or high matrix samples, the Suppressa ensures the analytical results are sound.
