Silica (USP L3)

Silica (USP L3) – High Polarity Normal-Phase Separations

Overview

Unbonded silica columns provide strong polar interaction and are best suited for normal-phase separations.

Silica (Unbonded) – Bare high-purity silica surface for normal-phase chromatography or HILIC mode. Ideal for polar analytes and when an adsorption-based separation on unmodified silica is desired (offers a non-porous alternative for normal-phase workflows).

Key Properties

  • Separation Mechanism: Strong hydrogen bonding and polar interactions.
  • pH Range: pH 2–7 (non-aqueous mobile phases recommended)
  • Carbon Load: None (bare silica)
  • Endcapping: Not applicable

Performance & Benefits

Ideal for separating polar analytes and isomers.

Supports both normal-phase and HILIC methods.

Excellent for preparative and flash chromatography of polar compounds.

Recommended Application Areas

  • Carbohydrates and sugar alcohols
  • Natural product purification
  • Fine chemical separations in non-aqueous systems
